Corrie's Chris Gascoyne warns fans that Peter Barlow at risk of alcoholism death

Coronation Street actor Chris Gascoyne has teased that his character Peter Barlow might be at 'risk of alcoholism death' if he returns to drinking.

The 52-year-old star - who has played the Corrie character for 20 years - implied that the character might face some trouble during the upcoming 60th anniversary episode.

It comes as ITV viewers eagerly watch Peter and partner Carla Connor (Alison King) reach breaking point in their relationship.

Ahead of the upcoming 60th anniversary, Chris has revealed to Metro that his character might not survive if he turns to the bottle once more.

"I love the character of Peter. I don’t think too much about the character, the writers write it so well and I just play it. He is troubled but he is a survivor," Peter told the publication.

"I kind of understand him through instinct – I don’t understand his choices but I understand why he does it.

"Whenever he has to hurt Ken, that’s the hardest bit for me and I don’t know why!

He added: "We discussed the alcoholism relapse in the 60th anniversary – for so long, every time he has a drink, we are told that he can’t drink again or he will die. After this he can never ever drink again," he concluded.

Last time Peter succumbed to alcohol abuse was when he was attacked by thugs while he was working as a taxi-driver.

In the weeks to come, it looks like Peter's family it set to be ripped apart when the character learns that Adam Barlow had a fling with Carla.

Should Peter reach for the alcohol one more time as his family setup crumbles, it has been teased the character might not recover.
