Corrie's Alexandra Mardell lands new TV role after soap exit as co-stars congratulate her

Alexandra Mardell has been congratulated by her Coronation Street co-stars as she bagged her first job after leaving the soap.

The actress played Emma Brooker on the ITV soap until earlier this year when she quit the programme as her character headed off to Australia with Ted's grandson, who vowed to keep her killer secret to himself. Emma and Faye were involved in the accidental death of elderly resident Ted, but the secret was too much to bear and Emma confessed what she'd done to Jon.

The pair ran off together to start a new life, and now Alexandra has bagged herself a new role with ITV. She has signed up for The Family Pile, which also stars Amanda Abbington, Clare Calbraith and Claire Keelan.

Taking to Twitter to share her excitement about the job, she wrote: "Had all the fun on this job!"

Some of her former co-stars rushed to congratulate her on the news.

Tony Maudsley - who plays George Shuttleworth - wrote alongside a string of clapping emojis, "Yayyy x," whilst Jack James Ryan - who stars as Jacob Hay - added: "Already killing it, no surprises! Can’t wait for this! x"

Harriet Bibby, who plays Summer Spellman, penned: "Amazing! Can’t wait! X."

Alexandra had previously explained how she had been getting loads of auditions since exiting Corrie.

She said: "It's a lot busier than I’d initially thought, which is lovely. I love, every time I get an audition through, the process of looking at the character and the part of what I’ve got to do. It’s really exciting.

"I’ve always loved auditioning in the past so it’s nice to get stuck back into that again. Luckily with Joe, because he’s an actor as well, we’ve got our little system so we help each other out a lot. We always help each other prepare for auditions, we’re like, ‘What do you think of this, shall I try this?’, so it’s really lucky that we’ve got each other."

At the time of her exit, Alexandra described Coronation Street as "the best experience of her life".

"Playing Emma, on the most iconic street there is, has been the best experience of my life," she said.

"But I feel it’s the right time for me. I can’t thank everyone at Coronation Street enough for welcoming me and trusting me to tell so many wonderful and heartfelt ­stories. And for the friendships."
