Corrie newcomer Tony Maudsley played another character on ITV soap 30 years ago

Coronation Street cast member Tony Maudsley has revealed he has a history with the ITV soap, ahead of his arrival as newcomer George Shuttleworth - with it revealed he has been on the soap a couple of times before.

The Benidorm actor's character is tipped to be caught up in a love triangle involving Eileen Grimshaw and Mary Taylor.

George is the son of late Weatherfield favourite Archie Shuttleworth, and he has taken over his father's funeral directors business.

Sadly, Archie actor Roy Hudd passed away earlier this year in March aged 83.

Roy and Tony filmed together in Benidorm, with Tony gutted he couldn't have shared scenes with him on the soap too.

But this isn't the star's first stint on Corrie, as he was on the show before in a different role.

Around 30 years ago, Tony made his soap debut in his first TV role since leaving drama school - with him credited on IMDB as having played a drinker in the pub twice, while also playing another role later on.

He starred in a scene with Alec Gilroy, played by actor Roy Barraclough, and the scene was played on Lorraine as Tony appeared on the show on Wednesday.

Speaking about the past scenes, he told Lorraine Kelly he had "come full circle".

He said: "Corrie was my very first job out of drama school, so I've kind of come full circle 30 years later.

"I did a scene with Roy Barraclough, so here I am back 30 years later."

Speaking about carrying on Roy Hudd's legacy as the son of his character, Tony confessed he wished he could have filmed alongside him.

He told Lorraine: "I'm really proud, he was such a lovely man.

"We were in Benidorm together a few years ago, who'd have thought a few years down the line I'd be taking the Shuttleworth medal forward and continuing his name in Corrie.

"I'm really proud to do it, he was such a lovely man and it's a shame we didn't get to do any scenes together, and run the Shuttleworth empire together."

The soap will reference Archie and George's Weatherfield history when he heads to The Rovers in upcoming scenes.

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7:30pm and 8:30pm on ITV.
