Corrie hit with complaints from viewers over harrowing Seb and Nina attack scenes

It has been an emotional week on the cobbles of Coronation Street following the attack on young lovebirds Seb Franklin and Nina Lucas.

The characters suffered horrific injuries when they were set upon by gang of teenagers - including Corey Brent and Kelly Neelan - in a hate crime attack.

There was further heartbreak when Seb, played by actor Harry Visinoni, sadly died of his injuries in distressing scenes with mum Abi by his hospital bedside.

The harrowing storyline has been inspired by the death of Sophie Lancaster in 2007.

Sophie lost her life after she and boyfriend Robert Maltby were attacked in in Stubbylee Park, Bacup because they were members of the goth subculture.

The ITV soap aired scenes last Wednesday (May 5) that showed the moments before the unprovoked attack over goth Nina's appearance.

As the couple tried to hurry away Seb was knocked to the ground and kicked as Nina ran in a bod to escape.

While the episode ended at the point, 136 complaints were made to broadcasting watchdog Ofcom.

They confirmed that the complaints related to scenes depicting the attack on Seb and Nina.

When the episode aired, many fans said they 'felt sick' watching the heartbreaking story unfold.

"Too violent for this time of night. I feel sick," said one.

Another commented: "I know it's just a soap but Nina & Seb's attack is so so upsetting to see. Hope all those kids get caught and punished! #Corrie."

But many also praised the soap for its portrayal and shining a light on hate crime.

"I absolutely love #Corrie shining a spotlight on an older character to reflect and speak about the traumatic events of a storyline. Gail's monologue with Aidan's suicide, Ken with Sinead's cancer and now Roy with Nina and Seb's attack. Truly outstanding, genius work," tweeted a viewer.

Another praised: "Credit where it’s due #corrie are doing a amazing job with this attack storyline So powerful."

The soap has worked with Sylvia Lancaster who founded The Sophie Lancaster Foundation in memory of her daughter Sophie who was murdered in a park for the way she looked.

Sylvia teamed up with Corrie with the mission of tackling and encouraging more people to report hate crime.
