Corrie fans baffled over news evil Phelan is 'returning' to the street

Coronation Street fans have been left baffled after it has been revealed that Pat Phelan is 'returning' to the street.

The character, played by Connor McIntyre, was one of the more recent cobbles criminals.

Phelan started out on the street by blackmailing both Owen and Gary Windass before racking up a whole list of crimes.

He was behind the death of Michael Rodwell (Les Dennis), the kidnap and murder of Andy Carver and later also killed Luke Britton.

All of his hideous crimes were exposed back in 2018, and a confrontation with wife Eileen Grimshaw saw him fall into the sea.

But that wasn't the end of the character when he returned and attempted to flee Weatherfield with his grandson Zack.

However, Phelan ended up shooting both his long-lost daughter, Nicola Rubinstein, and Michelle Connor on her wedding day, before he was stabbed to death by Anna Windass.

So with that, his comeback isn't of the usual kind.

Next week in Coronation Street, keen to show his gratitude to George Shuttleworth for standing by him, Todd Grimshaw conducts a thorough clear out of the storeroom at the undertakers.

George masks his uneasiness. George’s worries are justified when an outraged Todd emerges from the storeroom clutching Phelan’s ashes.

George says that he’s never found the right moment to tell Eileen about them. What will they do?

As Corrie tested the news on their official Twitter account, fans were quick to share their confusion - and disappointment.

"I do wish you wouldn't "tease" like that. For a second there , I thought the brilliant @connor9mcintyre might be making an unexpected return... Still, perhaps nice guy #MattPhelan could call round to collect his twin's ashes?" one commented.

Another said: "Hahah oh, I wish Phelan was back. I miss him, one of my fave villains!"

"I see Phelan’s ashes are back on the street next week. Can we have flashbacks and get @connor9mcintyre back on the street #corrie #phelan @itvcorrie PLEEEEEAAAASSSSEEE!!"

A fourth tweeted: "So he's been in the ashes on the street all this time and no one knew."
