Corrie character makes bid to end his own life in harrowing scenes

Coronation Street fans have seen Peter Barlow face another struggle with his alcoholism following an ordeal at the end of last year.

The soap favourite, played by Chris Gascoyne, was diagnosed with liver failure after hitting the bottle again and sadly he's now adamant he is going to die.

In Monday night's double bill Peter returned from Scotland explaining he hasn’t touched a drop of alcohol.

But at the hospital he was told there’s no improvement in his liver function.

And to make things worse he met a fellow patient awaiting a transplant, who shunned him when he told her why he needed one.

Back at home his half-brother Daniel Osbourne told Peter that he was prepared to be his liver donor if he's a match.

But the reaction wasn't what they had hoped.

Peter asked his solicitor nephew Adam to draw up an Advance Decision to Refuse Treatment declaration, insisting he isn’t deserving of a transplant.

Ken was horrified (ITV)

As Ken begged Peter to consider Daniel’s offer and not to throw his life away, he insisted that he was a 'waste of space' and wants to die on his in terms.

"Think of your grandchildren, you'd be nothing but a photograph," implored Ken.

"One swipe of the finger and I'll be gone," Peter retorted.

"Have it your way but don't say we never tried," said an upset Ken.

In 2018 actor Chris sensationally revealed that he wanted to see his long-serving character killed off by drinking himself to death over a period of two years.

Chris, who has played Peter in the soap since 2000, said it would be the right ending for Peter, whose drinking has affected his relationships with loved-ones including his father Ken, teenage son Simon, Carla and his ex Leanne Battersby.

Peter had kept his drinking under control, even at Christmas 2017 when it appear he might waver when he discovered that vicar Billy Mayhew was responsible for the death of his twin sister Susan and drove him to the edge of a cliff.

"I think, this is just me now. If they said to me next year 'we're going to write Peter out' or if I say 'look I've had enough' I think that's the story we'd have to do where he just basically drinks himself to death," Chris told us previously.

"I don't think it would be a very nice storyline but I think it would be brilliant.

"I don't think it's been done in anything but over two years for this guy to just ... something tragic happens, really tragic and he's already fell off the wagon twice, big, where he's nearly died.

"They always say there's only three and he's not got another one in him to recover from it and if the damage is bad enough he would just drink himself into oblivion."

At the end of last year Peter did the unthinkable when he reached for the bottle again after having his taxi stolen in a vicious attack.

He went on a downward spiral after a passer-by who came to his aid offered him a hip flask containing whisky.

Things then went from bad to worse when he found out that his fiancee Carla Connor had cheated on him with Adam.
