An investigation will be launched into how a prisoner was set free by accident last week.

An investigation will be launched into how a Victorian prisoner was accidentally set free last week.

A man turned himself in on Friday after being told he was accidentally released from a medium-security facility on Tuesday, May 26.

Corrections Victoria became aware of the error and issued a warrant for the man's arrest.

Corrections Victoria has confirmed to the ABC it is conducting an investigation into the incident, which is believed to have been the result of human error.

A Department of Justice and Community Safety spokesperson said the circumstances of the incident were being looked at and appropriate action would be taken.

A State Government spokesperson told the ABC the release of the prisoner was "completely unacceptable".

He was being held at a prison near Sale in Gippsland, according to the Sunday Herald Sun.
