Chancellor Rishi Sunak warned of "tough times" ahead as experts say social distancing could last until 2022.
The Chancellor told the daily Downing Street Press conference that "not every household could be protected" after the Office for Budget Responsibility said Britain’s economy may shrink by 35% between April and June this year.
It came as researchers at Harvard University published a study that found that while one-time social distancing may suppress critical Covid-19 cases to within hospital capacity, infection will resurge once these measures are lifted.
This will overwhelm hospitals to the extent that social distancing may need to be maintained intermittently into 2022.
