A coronial inquest will be held into the death of Newcastle Knights youth player Elijah Faalua, the NSW Department of Communities and Justice has confirmed.

Faalua, 17, was a passenger in a Subaru Forester that police allege hit steel concrete bollards in the middle of a road at the Hunter Economic Zone at Pelaw Main in April.

A spokesman said the inquest would be held at Cessnock Coroners Court.

"No hearing date has been set at this stage," the spokesman said.

The Newcastle Herald reported on Friday that a 17-year-old male had been charged with a range of offences over the incident, including dangerous driving occasioning death and driving recklessly/furiously.

The teenager was a Kurri Kurri junior who played fullback or wing in the Knights' under 17s side.
