Coroner to examine death of Nottingham boy who collapsed after playing football with friends

An inquest has been opened into the death of a 13-year-old Nottingham boy who collapsed after coming home from playing football. Kellum Thomas died on June 9 last year after having a kick around with his friends close to his home in Top Valley.

He was taken to the Queen's Medical Centre where he later died. He had underlying health issues and a heart condition and attended Westbury Academy in Bilborough, which provides support for children with physical, mental and social health difficulties.

An inquest into Kellum's death was opened at Nottingham Council House on Tuesday, May 10, by assistant coroner Fiona Gingell. She said the 13-year-old had been beside his mum, Jodie Wilson, when he died at the hospital.

"In accordance with my statuory duty I have opened an inquest into the death of Kellum Thomas. I would like to take this opportunity to express my condolences to his family in relation to their sad loss." The case was adjourned until Friday, May 27.

Speaking shortly after her son's death, Ms Wilson described Kellum as a "caring" boy who "always put a smile on everyone's face". She said: "Despite his health conditions, he lived life to the fullest. He never gave up. I am so proud to be his mum. My heart is broken, but his strength is what has given me mine."
