The death of a diabetic teenager after developing gastro during a Melbourne school trip to Vietnam will be examined in an inquest.
Lachlan Cook became critically ill during a World Challenge trip with Kilvington Grammar School in September 2019.
The 16-year-old had been managing type one diabetes since the age of nine. His glucose level spiked after he developed gastro in Hoi An.
The next day, Lachlan became unresponsive and staff rushed him to hospital, where he went into cardiac arrest.
He was flown to Bangkok, then the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne and died from complications on October 4 that year.
Lachlan would have turned 18 on Wednesday.
Instead, his devastated parents attended Victoria's Coroners Court on Thursday for a preliminary hearing ahead of an inquest.
Coroner Audrey Jamieson is set to examine issues including how Lachlan managed his diabetes and guided staff about what to do when he became unwell.
The court was told his doctor had signed off on a plan to manage the condition ahead of the trip and the school was informed.
The case is due back before Ms Jamieson in July.
