Coronavirus: Young man 'licked his fingers and rubbed them onto food' in Lidl

A young man licked his fingers and rubbed them on food in Lidl during the coronavirus pandemic, police say.

The 20-year-old suspect has now been charged with contaminating goods after it is said he entered the supermarket in Bridport, Dorset, on Friday at around 2pm, wearing a face mask and gloves.

But Dorset Police say he lowered his face mask and licked his fingers to purposefully rub them onto a product.

It is unclear at this stage what product this is thought to have been.

The man, from Bridport, was arrested and charged. He will now appear at Weybridge Magistrates' Court on Wednesday May 6.

"The man did not have a confirmed case of COVID-19 (coronavirus) and was not displaying symptoms," Dorset Police said in a statement.

"Following enquiries, the 20-year-old local man was arrested and subsequently charged with an offence of contaminating or interfering with goods with intent under section 38 of the Public Order Act 1986."

The investigation continues.
