Coronavirus: WHO's top tips to protect yourself from the deadly COVID-19

The World Health Organisation has issued some top tips to stay safe as the deadly coronavirus has rapidly spread across Euope.

The first Irish coronavirus case was confirmed by health authorities yesterday.

The HSE have identified and been in touch with everyone who came into contact with Northern Ireland's coronavirus patient.

Irish health officials have been working to find anyone who may be affected after the island's first case was confirmed yesterday.

The woman who contracted the virus is believed to have travelled into Dublin Airport before taking a train to the north.

How to protect yourself against coronavirus

The Department of Foreign affairs has warned Irish tourists against travelling to countries affected by COVID-19.

Symptoms for coronavirus include coughing, shortness of breath, breathing difficulties, fever, and the virus can cause more severe illnesses including pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, and kidney failure.

It takes up to 14 days for the symptoms of the respiratory illness to appear.

Here is what you can do to protect yourself from the outbreak according to WHO:

  1. Wash your hands frequently using soap and water or alcohol-based hand sanitisers.
  2. Maintain a distance of at least one metre (or three feet) between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing.
  3. Avoid touching your face including your eyes, nose, and mouth as it may transfer the virus into your system.
  4. Make sure you cover your mouth and nose with your arm or tissue when coughing or sneezing. Remember to bin the used tissue immediately.
  5. Stay home if you’re unwell and if you’re showing symptoms of COVID-19 including fever, cough and difficulty breathing. Call your GP for advice if you think you may be infected.
  6. Stay informed and follow advice from the HSE and your GP.
