Coronavirus: Who is now eligible for a test?

Health Secretary Matt Hancock announced on Tuesday that testing across the UK is being massively ramped up. But who is now eligable for a test?

How is testing being expanded?

Everyone in England over 65 with symptoms, and members of their household with symptoms will be able to be tested. People with symptoms who are unable to work from home can also get a test. All NHS and care home staff and residents are also eligible — whether or not they have symptoms. Previously it was just key workers and their families who could be tested.

How do you apply?

Visit the online portal at gov.uk/coronavirus. Essential workers who are self-isolating can also be registered and referred by their employer.

Where do you get a test?

There are more than 40 drive-through testing sites across the country. These include car parks at Ikea in Wembley and the O2 in North Greenwich. A further 48 drive-throughs should open this week. Mobile testing units is also travelling the country.

Can I be tested at home?

Yes — but it might take longer. A pilot scheme sending kits out has dispatched 4,760 tests. The aim is to have 25,000 a day available.

What about everybody else?

The Government says “the ultimate aim is that anyone who needs a test will be able to have one”.

What does the test involve?

Taking a swab of the nose and the back of the throat.
