Coronavirus: What should I stock up on during a quarantine?

Ireland is braced for possible further cases of the coronavirus as the first confirmed patient is being treated at a Dublin hospital.

Large gatherings could be banned, like sports matches including Ireland's Euro 2020 play-off tie with Slovakia later this month.

While the Irish rugby team's clash with Italy in the Aviva Stadium this weekend has already been called off.

The Department of Health recommends that anyone who is experiencing symptoms, and has recently travelled from one of the coronavirus-affected areas, should go into "self-isolation".

But what should people make sure they have in their homes if they do have to self-quarantine.

Here are the key items everyone should have.

14-day supply of food

While you can still order deliveries and have these dropped off on your doorstep, it is being recommended people have enough food to see them through for the whole two weeks.

It's best to focus on dry and tinned items that keep for a long time and are easy to prepare.

Recommended foods include baked beans, tinned tomatoes, rice, pasta, beans and oats, should make up the core of your supplies.

These can be supplements with things like tinned fish and meat.

But there's some good news if you're stuck indoors for two weeks - it's also recommended you have some comfort food, non-essential, food like coffee, tea and chocolate.

Enough water for everyone

It's been recommended people have three-and-a-half litres for each person for each day.

How to protect yourself against coronavirus

Hygiene products

Making sure you can keep yourself, and any surfaces, clean is key.

So it's recommended people make sure they have enough soap, hand sanitiser, toiler paper, tissues, feminine hygiene products and nappies to see them through a quarantine period.

Prescription medication

As people will be unable to leave home to visit their doctor or a chemist, it's being advised to stock up on any prescription medicine you may need.

Enough to last you two weeks but 30 days if it's possible.

First aid kit

Even in quarantine, accidents can still happen, so it's recommended people have a first aid kit with all the essentials to treat minr injuries.

This includes  plasters, bandages, antiseptic creams, a thermometer, scissors and gauze.

Any other medical kit

Make sure you have cold and flu remedies, paracetamol or other painkillers and cough mixture if you do become ill.

Tablets or sachets for an upset tummy or urinary infections could also be needed along with rehydration sachets.

Other vital kit

Contact lense wearers need to make sure they have enough lenses and solution to see them through. Or glasses so they can see.

Similarlily people who wear hearing aids should make sure they have a supply of batteries.

Additional batteries for the home are also advised.
