Coronavirus: Watch stirring and emotional rendition of Sunshine on Leith during Clap for Carers

Leithers came together on the streets of Edinburgh last night in tribute of Clap for Carers, with an emotional and stirring rendition of local anthem Sunshine on Leith.

The community have already led the way in celebrating hard-working frontline staff, with a viral piper Louise Marshall, 50, taking to the streets to pipe for key workers.

Clap for Carers has become a national tradition amid the pandemic, taking place every Thursday at 8pm when people across the UK clap and cheer to show their appreciation for NHS and social care workers.

Last night, locals on Leith Walk used their voices to mark the emotional moment, on a week that it emerged the UK now has the highest number of coronavirus deaths in Europe as the figure soared over 30,000.

And, of course, the song of choice was The Proclaimers' uplifting track Sunshine on Leith.

A clip from Leith Walk shows locals going about their business having stopped on the streets to join in the tribute, while residents stuck their heads out of windows to belt out the tune in an emotional and stirring rendition that was heard from afar.

It is understood Electrikal Sound System, who are based on Great Junction Street and have supplied sound to major events and music festivals across the UK, organised the tribute to show their support for frontline workers.
