Coronavirus Wales: The rules on weddings and funerals now indoor meetings limited to six people

The First Minister has announced new rules in Wales to limit the number of people who can meet indoors to six.

The new rules mirror the "rule of six" announced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Wednesday and by Nicola Sturgeon in Scotland on Thursday, but only applies to indoor gatherings in Wales.

The six people must all belong to the same extended household group but it does not apply to children aged 11 or under. It will apply in all pubs, restaurants and private homes.

This has left people with weddings and funerals concerned that it will affect them.

When questioned by WalesOnline at the Welsh Government press conference, First Minister Mark Drakeford said weddings and funerals were exempt.

He said: "Funerals and weddings are not affected by the 6 person rule. They are exempt from that, they will be able to continue as the have previously."

Current guidelines from Saturday, August 22, allow a gathering of up to 30 people a meal following a wedding, civil partnership or funeral will be allowed for if social distancing can be maintained.

The guidelines for local authorities say that gatherings for the wedding ceremony itself are limited only by the capacity of the building itself.

The Welsh Government said there will be no change to the current rules, which allow up to four households to form an exclusive extended household in Wales, and no change to the rules on meeting outdoors which allow up to 30 people to meet.
