Coronavirus: Vision Express to close all branches under Government orders

Vision Express has announced it's closing all branches under Government orders.

The opticians group said all stores have closed with immediate effect while all pre-booked and routine appointments have been cancelled.

It said the decision has been made "for the safety and wellbeing of customers and colleagues".

"We believe that eyecare is a specialism required to maintain our health sector and wish to play our role during the Coronavirus outbreak in providing frontline, emergency eyecare support," a statement said.

The company will continue to offer a key health service to meet urgent eye care needs during the crisis, especially for isolating elderly people and key workers, and to divert patients from GPs, A&E and hospital emergency eye departments.

This means a small number of branches will remain open for emergencies.

Boris Johnson: Staying at home rules are to help NHS

From March 27, the company will be offering a limited number of urgent and emergency eye care appointments from a reduced number of stores across the UK and Ireland.

These stores will operate reduced opening hours from 10am to 5pm Tuesday to Saturday - all appointments will be limited to one per hour to ensure social distancing.

For any customers wanting to collect glasses, these will now be sent free of charge via Hermes to your chosen address.

The move comes after Boots Opticians revealed plans to close all of its branches on Wednesday following increased pressure from the Government to discourage the public from leaving their homes amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The company said it had taken the decision to protect the health and wellbeing of customers and staff.

"We are constantly monitoring the situation, working with government guidance and the NHS, and we will open our doors again as soon as we can," a statement said.

Optical Express has also provided a Covid-19 update on its website, after PM Boris Johnson announced strict guidelines on Monday night.

"We are following government, public health and regulatory/professional body advice and at this time we are not currently scheduling consultations or routine sight tests," the company said.

"A small number of clinics remain open to provide essential or emergency clinical care.

"We will update you as the situation changes."

Optical Express said those with questions or concerns regarding their eye care should contact its teams, email or use the live chat function online.

To date, the incredibly contagious coronavirus infection has taken 578 lives in the UK - while around 12,000 people have tested positive.
