Coronavirus vaccine Russia: President Putin reveals vaccine has been approved for use

Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced that a coronavirus vaccine has been approved for use.

The vaccine, developed by Moscow's Gamaleya Institute, has been given regulatory approval after less than two months of testing on humans, reports the BBC.

Making the announcement on state television, Putin insisted that the vaccine was safe and had passed the necessary checks.

Taking to social media calling it the "world's first vaccine against coronavirus", President Putin offered "sustainable immunity" against the coronavirus.

He even revealed that it had already been given to one of his daughters and said the the drug "gives hope not only to our country, but to the whole world".

The government plan to start a mass vaccination in October despite experts raising concerns.

The Russian vaccine is not among the WHO's list of six vaccines which have now reached phase three clinical trials and the organisation have urged Russia to follow international guidelines for producing a coronavirus vaccine.

Meanwhile, last month researchers at Oxford University conducting trials on a possible coronavirus vaccine found that it appears to be safe.

The trials also showed that the vaccine could induce an immune response, which can help patients develop antibodies to safely fight off the virus.
