Coronavirus updates: Indoor gatherings 'to be reduced to six' and older people set to be made 'limit time outside'

Indoor gatherings are set to be reduced to just six people and older people will be advised to limit time spent outside, according to reports.

Following a surge in Covid-19 cases over the last two weeks, the Cabinet is meeting to discuss the latest recommendations of the National Public Health Emergency Team's (NPHET).

More county lockdowns, a return to cocooning for the vulnerable and how to open schools safely are all on the agenda at the crunch meeting today.

After a major recent spike of cases, it is understood that NPHET told Health Minister Stephen Donnelly last night that stricter measures may have to be reintroduced.

Independent.ie reports that older people will be asked to limit their time outdoors and avoid congregated settings.

It's believed NPHET has also recommended that only six people from three different homes should be allowed meet indoors, while outdoor gatherings should be reduced to just 15.

People who can work from home are asked to continue to do so for the coming weeks.

No decisions were taken at the Department of Health last night on any specific moves and the crunch meeting today will see the three party leaders of the coalition, Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Tánaiste Leo Varadkar and Green leader, Eamon Ryan, all have their say.

There were 56 cases and no deaths announced last night, down from the weekend figures, but this was not seen as a substantial enough drop for complacency as the average daily figure is now running close to 80.
