The World Health Organisation has reported 284,196 new Covid-19 cases globally, the most recorded in a single day.
This jumped by 24,348 from the previous record of 259,848, which was on July 18.
And deaths rose by 9,753, the largest amount in a 24-hour period since April 30.
The United States was the most affected with 69,641 new cases, followed by Brazil (67,860), India (49,310) and South Africa (13,104).

Worldwide deaths have averaged 5,000 per day in July, up from 4,600 in June.

The WHO has also expressed major concern over a Covid-19 resurgence in Europe, with the UK, France, Germany and Austria all announcing tighter mask requirements and extra testing as a result.
Europe accounts for one fifth the 15 million cases across the globe, and accounts for around one third of all deaths.
The news comes as Ireland recorded zero deaths and 20 new cases on Friday.
It means the death toll in the Republic remains at 1,763, while the total number of cases has now hit 25,845.
