Coronavirus update: Person under age of 35 becomes one of Ireland's latest victims of Covid-19

A person under the age of 35 has become one of the latest victims of the coronavirus in Ireland.

The death has been revealed in the Health Protection Surveillance Centre's latest report.

Their death was reported in the 24 hours prior to midnight on Monday, May 4.

The patient has become the fifth person aged between 25 and 34 to pass away in the Republic after contracting the disease.

The report does not state whether the person had an underlying condition or not.

A 17-year-old and a 23-year-old are the ages of the country's youngest victims.

The rest of Ireland's deaths linked to the virus are made up of nine people in the 35-44 age bracket, 19 patients aged between 45-54, 48 cases in the 55-64 category and 1,045 people over the age of 65.

These figures relate to the 1,128 deaths recorded by the HPSC as of midnight on Monday.

However, the most recent death toll in the Republic of Ireland now stands at 1,375 after the announcement of 37 more deaths on Wednesday evening.

The Department of Health also announced 265 new cases of the virus, bringing the total number of confirmed infections to 22,248.

Speaking on Wednesday, Dr Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health, said: "The World Health Organization has advised that a likely future scenario in the dynamic of Covid-19 is recurring epidemic waves interspersed with periods of low-level transmission.

"This means that when Ireland eases social distancing restrictions, we may have periods of time when the numbers of people infected increases significantly.

"This is why it is vitally important that easing of social distancing restrictions is accompanied by a high level of adherence to the fundamental, individual behaviours needed to guard against transmission of the virus.

"We have to adapt our behaviours in order to live safely with COVID-19."
