Coronavirus: UK records 156 more deaths and 20,572 cases on first Sunday of new lockdown

A further 156 people have died with Covid-19 and 20,572 more positive cases have been confirmed.

A total of 1,192,013 have now tested positive for the deadly disease in the UK since the pandemic began, with 49,044 of those having lost their lives.

Last Sunday 162 more Covid-19 deaths were added to the grim tally.

The totals tend to be lower on Sundays and Mondays due to a lag in reporting.

By way of comparison, yesterday 413 more deaths were reported - the biggest increase since May.

Across the UK the latest R number is estimated at 1.1 to 1.3, with a daily infection growth rate range of +2% to +4%.

That means that daily infections are expected to grow, despite more stringent restrictions on freedoms having been introduced on Thursday.

It is likely they will take several weeks to have an impact on the infection rate.

Although Covid-19 deaths have now reached levels last seen in the early Summer, hundreds of people took to the streets of Manchester today to protest against the lockdown.

Huge crowds marched through Manchester city centre, accusing MPs who voted for the lockdown of treason.

Many held placards of anti-lockdown slogans, with one reading "Fear is the currency of control" while some chanted "take off your masks", witnesses claimed.

Video circulating on social media showed a man on a megaphone addressing the crowd with chants of "freedom, freedom, freedom" ringing through the streets.

He said: "Those 300-plus politicians that voted for the lockdown are treasonous."
