Coronavirus UK hospital deaths rise by 381 but fall slightly on a week ago

A further 381 people have died of Covid-19 in UK hospitals.

In England a further 295 people died of Covid-19 in hospital, 24 in Wales, 51 in Scotland and 11 in Northern Ireland.

The grim figures represent a fall on the 438 recorded by this measure last Thursday, November 26.

Yesterday a further 465 people's deaths from Covid-19 in UK hospitals were added to the grim tally.

The youngest person among them was a 19-year-old in England, who did not have any underlying health conditions.

In all settings including care homes, 59,699 have died within 28 days of catching Covid-19 in the UK, with a further 648 added to the tally yesterday.

Of the latest coronavirus fatalities in hospitals in England, 83 were in the Midlands, 52 in the North West and 48 in London.

The vast majority were aged over 60, with just one patient aged 20-39.

While Covid-19 is still killing several hundred people each day across the country, increasingly there appears to be hope that the pandemic can come to an end.

The first doses of the approved coronavirus vaccine are due to arrive in the UK today.

Professor Jonathan Van-Tam, deputy chief medical officer for England, confirmed the jab from Pfizer and BioNTech - approved by the UK medicines regulator on Wednesday - will hit British shores in "hours, not days".

Once the vaccine arrives in the UK from Pfizer's plant in Belgium, it is thought batches will be checked at a central depot to ensure their quality.

Public Health England will process orders placed by the NHS for next-day delivery to hospital hubs around the UK.

Meanwhile the Army has been carrying out Covid jab "dry runs"  in advance of the country's biggest ever mass vaccination programme.

It comes as the country battles with logistical challenges in administering it to those at the top of the priority list.
