Coronavirus UK deaths jump back up to 138 day after lowest toll since March

The UK has recorded 138 coronavirus deaths in the past 24 hours after Sunday's total had dropped to 11.

Figures released this afternoon by the Department of Health and Social Care revealed that 44,968 people have now died from coronavirus across all settings as of 5pm on Monday, an increase of eleven on yesterday's total.

Yesterday's figures marked the lowest daily tota l since the second week of March, although there are frequent time lags in the reporting of coronavirus deaths at weekends.

The government figures do not include e very Covid-19 death, but do include care settings, hospitals and elements of the wider community.

In the past 24 hours there had been a further 398 confirmed UK cases of the disease.

A total of 291,373 cases have been confirmed in the UK since the pandemic began.

The news comes as new mobile coronavirus testing sites were launched in south Liverpool yesterday after a concerning rise in coronavirus infections among young people in the city.

Members of the armed forces were spotted operating a mobile testing site in Woolton over the weekend and at Wavetree Sports Park on Monday.

There will also be a pop-up facility in Halewood - another area that has seen a rise in infections amongst young people - between Tuesday and Friday and then again from Friday to Sunday.

People are being urged to get tested instantly if they have any symptoms after new data received by local health chiefs indicated a swell of new infections in certain areas - particularly amongst young people.

There have been around 30 new cases of Covid-19 in s outh Liverpool and neighbouring Halewood over the last fortnight, with half of them in people aged 15 to 24.
