Coronavirus: UK death tolls rise to 5,373

The UK’s coronavirus death toll has increased by 439 to 5,373 in one day.

As of 9am on April 6, the number of people, who tested positive for coronavirus and then died, has risen to 5,373.

In total, 208,837 people across the UK have been tested for COVID-19 of which 51,608 have been confirmed to have the potentially deadly disease.

The figure stood at 51,169 on Sunday as NHS staff started to be tested over the weekend alongside the patients with the most severe symptoms.

In Bristol, 211 people have now been confirmed to have contracted the virus following the biggest rise in numbers to date.

On Saturday a coronavirus swab testing centre was set up in the car park of Ashton Gate stadium for NHS staff.

The test centre will work as a drive-thru, so health workers will not have to leave their cars in order to get tested.

And coronavirus-related deaths at hospitals in the Bristol area have risen to 40 - with 10 deaths reported at one hospital trust across three days.
