Coronavirus: UK death toll reaches 1,400 as number of confirmed cases continues to rise

A further 180 people in the UK have died with coronavirus in hospital, according to the latest Department of Health figures.

The death toll is now 1,408 - a rise of 180 in the last 24 hours.

The figure is fewer than Saturday's March 28 record UK rise of 260.

As of 9am on March 30, a total of 134,946 people have been tested and 22,141 were positive.

In Bristol, the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the city has risen by 14 in a day - the biggest daily increase of confirmed cases so far.

The figure has gone from 78 to 92 in the city in today's (March 30) update from Public Health England.

Cases have also increased in surrounding areas. In South Gloucestershire, there are now 58 positive tests, with 36 in North Somerset and 39 in Bath & North-East Somerset.

It comes after First Bus confirmed on Sunday its Bristol-based driver Martin Egan has died with coronavirus.

The other two coronavirus deaths in the area are a 94-year-old man who passed away at Weston General Hospital and retired police officer Nick Matthews who died in Bristol Royal Infirmary on Saturday, March 14.

The 59-year-old, who had underlying health issues, died shortly after returning from a holiday in the Canary Islands.
