Coronavirus UK death toll almost at 37,000 as number rises again

The coronavirus death toll in the UK stands at almost 37,000, as 77 more people lost their life today.

The number of people who have died across the country from Covid-19 has risen by 77 in 24 hours.

The increase consists of 59 hospital patients in England, three people in Scotland, eight people in Northern Ireland and seven hospital patients and care home residents in Wales.

So far, no UK-wide figures from the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) have been released, so the total is taken from each nation’s individual reporting.

It brings the working total to 36,870.

But the government tally, when it is released later today, will be significantly higher as it includes deaths in care homes and the community.

However the true total is believed to be closer to 50,000 after new figures based on death certificates were revealed this week for victims in England, Wales and Scotland.

Those numbers, from the Office for National Statistics also showed that more than 1300 people have died from the virus in Merseyside.

In the week ending May 8, 109 people died Covid-19-related deaths in Merseyside, down from 160 the week before.

The number includes 63 deaths in hospitals, a fall from 76 a week before, and 42 deaths in care homes, down from 75.

The figures, from the Office for National Statistics, are based on the number of deaths registered up to May 16, where Covid-19 is mentioned on the death certificate.

Between the start of the outbreak and May 8, there have been 1,332 deaths across Merseyside involving Covid-19.
