Coronavirus TV: The classics available on iPlayer as the BBC opens its archive to see us through

With pubs, restaurants and gyms ordered to close in a bid to halt coronavirus, many are asking how they will keep themselves occupied as they follow advice to limit social contact.

The government introduced strong social distancing measures on Friday (20 March), and officials now say we should be avoiding all but absolutely essential social contact.

With schools closed too, many of us, parents especially, have been asking how they will keep themselves entertained.

The BBC, ITV and other broadcasters had previously announced filming had been suspended on a host of TV favourites, including Coronation Street, Eastenders, Holby City and Line of Duty.

Some reacted better to the news than others, with many fans taking to social media to say how upset they were.

Fear not, whilst your daily dose of your favourite soaps and dramas might have been limited, the BBC has announced that it has opened its archives and would be making a number of TV classics available once again on its streaming platform.

BBC boss Lord Tony Hall has said that as well as ensuring "essential" news and information programming is maintained, alongside special coronavirus programmes, the national broadcaster would be helping to keep us entertained.

"We all know these are challenging times for each and every one of us. As the national broadcaster, the BBC has a special role to play at this time of national need," he said.

To helps parents home schooling their children, the broadcaster will also be airing specialist education programming as well entertainment shows.

Promising to keep people entertained, the BBC said it would be providing laughter and a sense of companionship as well find our through the pandemic.

Amongst several shows being made available on the BBC iPlayer are comedy classics including French And Saunders.

The Yes, Minister political comedy series is also rumoured to be a possibility.

Other box sets from archive that you'll be able to binge watch include the spy thriller Spooks, as well as mini-series including The Honourable Woman, The Missing and Waking the Dead.

For sports fans, the first ever Match Of The Day podcast is already available on BBC sounds.

Other shows available to stream include Absolutely Fabulous, all four series of Torchwood as well as later series of Doctor Who.
