Coronavirus: Transfer market set to resemble 'NBA swap shop'

The transfer market is set to become a summer swap shop like the NBA because of the economic impact of Covid-19.

Paris Saint-Germain smashed the world transfer record by paying £199m for Neymar in 2017.

But this year, when the transfer window opens, clubs across Europe will have lost billions of pounds in TV and ticket income.

And the way to freshen squads will be to trade players without transfer fees like in US sports.

Juventus ' sporting director Fabio Paratici told Tuttosport: “There will be a lot of swaps, a situation that will make football closer to the NBA.

"It is probable that some clubs, for example in Germany, can benefit from the general crisis because their underlying economy is more solid than the others.”

Inter transfer guru chief Beppe Marotta added: “Beyond the dates that are still to be determined, I think it will inevitably be a poorer market so there could be more player swaps.

“We’ll see a general drop in prices because the problem is global. It’ll be important to be able to exploit the resources of our academies.”

And Udinese's sporting director Pierpaolo Marino said: “For at least a year, deals from €100-150m (£88.3-132.5m), you can forget about them.

" I admit that if there is a transfer window in August – because I think it could go until January – it will be a market in recession. A player priced at €50m will be worth €30m.”

In England Manchester City were set for a summer overhaul as Pep Guardiola looked to build again with Leroy Sane almost certain to be a big-money departure.

Arch rivals Manchester United would also have been busy as a number of clubs look to negotiate transitional periods.

Arsenal and Tottenham are very much in the same bracket having changed managers midway through the season.
