Coronavirus: Tighter lockdown could follow if isolation advice ignored, minister warns

A Cabinet minister has warned that the UK could face a tighter lockdown if people don't follow new guidance to stay at home wherever possible.

On Friday, Boris Johnson announced the closure of pubs, restaurants and gyms in a bid to get people to stay home.

He warned that people who ignored the advice  risked "fatal consequences" and on Saturday doubled down on the advice asking people not to visit their mothers on Mother's Day.

But today Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick suggested that the the UK could follow other countries in Europe by enforcing a lockdown on the population if the advice wasn't followed.

But if the advice is followed Mr Jenrick insists that Brits will be able to "turn the tide" on coronavirus.

He told Sky's Sophie Ridge on Sunday: "If people don't follow that advice we'll clearly have to follow other options, but none of us want to go down that route."

In France, Italy and Spain restrictions on movement are much more intrusive - with people banned from leaving their homes without a specified reason.

Mr Jenrick was speaking after the government advised people with serious health conditions to isolate themselves for at least 12 weeks.

But he offered some light to people facing weeks without much contact with friends and families.

Asked if people can take their kids out to the playground, Robert Jenrick said: "You can" but "make your children stay a couple of metres away"

He also confirmed that people could go for walks and take exercise as long as they took sensible procautions.

The government confirmed yesterday that military logistics experts were being brought in to support those who have been asked to remain at home and ensure that they get the support they need.
