Coronavirus: Three more deaths reported in Bristol region

Another three coronavirus deaths have been confirmed in Bristol and surrounding areas.

The Government’s daily Covid-19 update shows no further deaths reported in the city today (January 2).

There were no deaths in South Gloucestershire, two deaths in North Somerset and one in Bath & North East Somerset (B&NES).

It means Bristol now has a Covid-19 death toll of 259, South Gloucestershire 229, North Somerset 199 and B&NES 83.

There were 290 new cases in Bristol today, but the highest increase in the region was in South Gloucestershire, which saw 115 new cases.

The breakdown of new cases

The daily rise in cases for each part of the region is recorded below, with the total figure during the pandemic in brackets:

  • Bath and North East Somerset: +95 (4,945)

  • Bristol: +290 (19,296)

  • North Somerset: +142 (6,034)

  • South Gloucestershire: +180 (8,833).

UK cases

The UK's official coronavirus death toll has increased by 445 with a further 57,725 new cases.

There have now been 74,570 fatalities within 28 days of a positive test, although the true toll is believed to be higher than 90,000 when death certificates mentioning Covid-19 are included.

The latest victims include an eight-year-old child in England.

It is the fourth straight day with more than 50,000 lab-confirmed cases. The number of confirmed infections is now 2,542,065.
