A woman was turned away from hospital three times before dying shortly after giving birth.
Jodian Fearon arrived at the Andrews Memorial Hospital in Kingston, Jamaica on Thursday ready to deliver her first child.
Believing that the 23-year-old had the coronavirus, staff made her leave the privately run hospital.
In a statement released after her death, the hospital said she was exhibiting symptoms of Covid-19 which concerned medics, as the hospital does not have an intensive care unit.
At that point in labour, Jodian tried to be admitted to the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) and the Victoria Jubilee Hospital, which both refused her medical care.
Eventually, the Spanish Town Hospital in St Catherine agreed to take her.
The young woman was taken to Spanish Town Hospital where she underwent a cesarean section delivery before her health deteriorated and she was rushed back to UHWI for emergency care, the Jamaica Gleaner reported.
Just six hours later she had lost her life, after testing negative for the coronavirus.
Jodian has left behind her new born daughter - who is said to be in good health - and her partner Kenton Senior.
The 41-year-old told the Gleaner: “I was trying to man up and play the tough guy, the macho man, but mi nah tell no lie, every time I look at the baby and then look at Jodi’s picture, sometimes mi just break down.
"It’s very hard."
Police have launched a probe into Jodian's death to determine whether or not criminal negligence contributed to her demise.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness vowed that there would be no cover up in a press conference on Monday.
“The full force of the state and all its resources will be brought to bear to ensure that those responsible are held to account following the death of Jodian Fearon,” he said, Jamaica Star reported.
The hospitals have come under the spotlight in the wake of Jodian's death.
Andrews claims that it cleared the maternity ward of other patients due to the coronavirus fears, before contacting Victoria Jubilee Hospital and UHWI to have her transferred, but they refused.
The hospital claimed it prepared for a cesarean-section on Friday, but the anaesthesiologists refused to take part, meaning Jodian had to be transferred to Spanish Town Hospital.
There have been 381 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Jamaica and seven deaths.
