Coronavirus: Third person in the UK confirmed as having the deadly virus

A third person in the UK has tested positive for coronavirus.

One patient is now being transferred to a specialist treatment centre.

The Government announced on Thursday that one more case of the virus had been detected in Britain, although the person has not caught the disease in the UK.

Hundreds of tests for the disease, which has now killed more than 560 people in mainland China and infected over 28,00 people.

The respiratory disease has left the city of Wuhan, where it originated, on lockdown, while flights from the city to the UK have been closely monitored.

The two cases confirmed last week were transported from York to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI), which is home to a High Consequence Infectious Disease treatment centre, one of just five in the UK where coronavirus patients can be treated most securely.

Government officials have not confirmed which treatment centre the new patient is being transferred to.

The Guardian is reporting that the person has been transferred to a centre in London.

On Thursday, spokesperson for the Department of Health and Social Care said: "A further patient in England has tested positive for coronavirus bringing the total number of cases in the UK to three. The individual did not acquire this in the UK."

Chief Medical officer Professor Chris Whitty said: "The patient is being transferred to a specialist NHS centre and we are using robust infection control measures to prevent any possible spread of the virus."

He said the NHS was "well-prepared" to handle the cases, and that work was now being done to identify who the new patient had been in contact with.

RVI staff last week moved to reassure patients, staff and visitors, saying the patients in the highly specialised centre posed "no risk" to anyone else visiting the hospital, and that anyone with appointments should attend them as planned.
