Coronavirus: Third confirmed case in UK as patient tests positive for deadly disease

A third UK patient has been diagnosed with coronavirus, medics have said.

The person, who has not been identified, contracted the disease overseas, the Department of Health confirmed.

The patient, reported to have contracted the disease in Singapore, was diagnosed in Brighton, and was taken to Guy's Hospital near London Bridge this afternoon.

It comes after two people in York, believed to be a student and his mum, were taken ill with the deadly disease, which has claimed more than 500 lives worldwide.

The student had been staying at Staycity Aparthotel in the city when they were taken ill last Wednesday, January 29.

Professor Chris Whitty said the person, who did not contract the virus in the UK, is currently being transferred to one of the UK's four infectious diseases centres for treatment.

Two other patients are still being treated at the Royal Victoria Infirmary infectious diseases centre in Newcastle upon Tyne.

In a statement, Prof Whitty said: "A further patient has tested positive for coronavirus, bringing the total number of cases in the UK to three.

"The individual did not acquire this in the UK.

"The patient is being transferred to a specialist NHS centre, and we are using robust infection control measures to prevent any possible further spread of the virus.

"The NHS is well prepared to manage these cases and we are now working quickly to identify any contacts the patient has had."

The York University student diagnosed with Coronavirus is believed to have returned to the UK from China to graduate.

Fellow Chinese students at the campus university, a couple of miles outside the city, think he was stopping in the hotel with a relative because he no longer had accommodation at halls of residence.

China's National Health Commission said the number of infected patients who were "discharged and cured" stood at 1,153 as of Thursday.

The virus is believed to have originated in the city of Wuhan, whose 11 million citizens have been put in lockdown in a desperate bid to contain its spread.

Details were not given, but milder cases have been seen in younger, healthier people.

The new virus is in the coronavirus family that includes Mers and Sars, and causes fever, cough and shortness of breath, and in severe cases pneumonia.

China has strongly defended its epidemic control measures, including locking down several cities in central Hubei province, where the outbreak has been concentrated.

Coronavirus spread among passengers of a quarantined Japanese cruise liner on Thursday and dragged down production at more global businesses, as scientists across the world searched for a vaccine.

The death toll from the virus in mainland China jumped by 73 to 563, with more than 28,000 confirmed infections.

On Tuesday, the Foreign Office urged all British nationals to leave China if they can.

However, Health Secretary Matt Hancock previously said there were "no plans to evacuate all remaining UK nationals".
