Coronavirus: The places with no new cases for a week

Two areas near Bristol have seen a slowdown in the spread of coronavirus, each going an entire week without any new confirmed cases.

Bath and North East Somerset and South Gloucestershire have both seen numbers stall, recording no additional cases of COVID-19 since Tuesday, June 9.

Known cases in those areas are still at 237 and 406 respectively, however, this only includes people who have tested positive for the virus.

The government releases a local breakdown every afternoon, and figures for yesterday (June 16) show that there are now 720 confirmed cases in Bristol.

This is the most of the four local authorities that make up the old Avon county, and is six more than the number recorded in Bristol on June 9.

Following a spike in cases earlier this month, the figures for North Somerset are also now looking more encouraging, with just two new cases within that same week-long period.

The number there now stands at 482, according to the data tables for Tuesday.

However, North Somerset still has the highest rate of cases compared to its neighbours, at 225.3 per 100,000 of the population.

This is still below the national rate for England, at 281.4, but is significantly more than the regional rate for the South West, which is at 140.9.

The rate in Bristol is 155.4, while South Gloucestershire's is at 143.6.

Bath and North East Somerset has the eighth-lowest rate in England, at 123.4.

Government guidance for comparing the statistics states: "The rates are easier to compare than the raw counts, but they do not take into account other factors that may affect the numbers of cases, such as the age of the population or the amount of testing carried out."

Nationally, 298,136 people have now tested positive in the UK, and 41,969 people who had tested positive have died.
