Coronavirus: the 40 places in England with the lowest infection rates

New data has revealed the parts of England with the lowest Covid-19 infection rates.

The figures, for the seven days to January 22, are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government’s testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two).

The rate is shown as the number of new cases per 100,000 people.

Data for the most recent four days (January 23-26) has been excluded as it is incomplete.

Analysis by the Press Association shows that Torridge in Devon continues to be the location with the lowest rate.

Its population as of 2019 was estimated to be 68,200.

Devon features repeatedly in the latest list, with nine places in total - all of which are in the lowest 16.

Greater Lincolnshire is second with six places on the list, while Gloucestershire has five and North Yorkshire three.

Tyne and Wear and East Yorkshire each have two locations on the list.

Cumbria, Somerset, Surrey, Leicestershire, Hampshire, West Yorkshire, Staffordshire, Norfolk, West Midlands, Rutland, Cambridgeshire, Cornwall and Oxfordshire all feature once.

The list has been calculated by the Press Association news agency based on Public Health England data published on January 26 on the Government’s coronavirus dashboard.

Here is the list in full. From left to right, it reads: name of local authority; rate of new cases in the seven days to January 22; number (in brackets) of new cases recorded in the seven days to January 22; rate of new cases in the seven days to January 15; number (in brackets) of new cases recorded in the seven days to January 15.
