Coronavirus testing facility opens for key workers at Prestwick Airport

A drive-through coronavirus testing facility has opened at Prestwick Airport.

The Ayrshire airport had been previously used as a trial centre over the course of the weekend - but is now fully operational.

It is now the sixth drive-through centre to offer both assisted and self-administered swab tests.

Similar facilities are available in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Perth and Inverness - in addition to a further 13 mobile testing units run by the army.

UK Government officials say that results from the site will be received within a few days.

Scottish Secretary Alister Jack said: "This new UK Government-funded testing site at Prestwick Airport will help key workers in the area continue their vital work, helping to look after those who need it most.

"This new centre means that six drive-through centres are now operating in Scotland, as well as 13 mobile units run by the army.

"The UK Government is expanding our Covid-19 testing capacity right across the UK."

A spokesman for the airport said: "We are delighted to be able to support the Department of Health and Social Care to provide a testing facility at the airport".

Anyone eligible for a test can book an appointment on the NHS website or by calling 0300 303 2713.
