A new Covid-19 test being developed at Queen’s University Belfast could confirm whether someone has the virus within an hour.
The study is in partnership with HiberGene Diagnostics Ltd, which has headquarters in Dublin, as well as Medcaptain in China and Italian hospital IRCCS Ospedale Policlinico in San Martino.
Queen’s, along with these organisations, has been awarded €930,000 from the EU H2020 fund to develop a highly accurate diagnostic test for Covid-19.
It is hoped that the test will show results within an hour.
This would enable clinicians to test for Covid-19 on site, eliminating the need to send tests to a centralised laboratory and saving time and resources.
Prof Cliff Taggart, a lead researcher at Queen’s University, said: “The local availability, speed and accuracy of the test will help inform public health preparedness and response in the ongoing pandemic.”
Seamus Gorman, CEO of Hibergene, added: “Rapid diagnosis and reporting of results is the key to containing the COVID 19 disease and this test can play an important role in its diagnosis and control.”
