Coronavirus symptoms: Irish doctor warns of two long term effects patients are experiencing

A top Irish doctor has warned about two long term effects of coronavirus experienced in patients here.

Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronan Glynn cited fatigue and loss of exercise capacity as two lasting effects of Covid-19.

And while Ireland's recovery rate of 92% is good, the doctor warned that people should still be wary of catching the disease.

Dr Glynn said: "Our recovery rate is now at 92%. While it is very welcome that the vast majority of people who contracted COVID-19 have recovered from the acute phase of their illness, there are many who continue to experience longer term effects including fatigue and decreased exercise capacity.

"Avoid contracting this new and unpredictable disease by following  public health advice  – regular hand washing, physical distancing and cough/sneeze etiquette.”

Dr Glynn was speaking as a further five deaths and 19 cases of the virus were announced on Wednesday evening.

There have now been 25,231 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ireland with 1,695 deaths.

Dr. Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health, said; “The National Public Health Emergency Team will meet again on Thursday to review Ireland’s ongoing response and preparedness to COVID-19.

"NPHET will also review updated World Health Organisation guidance on face coverings and consider communications regarding appropriate use of face coverings in community settings.”
