Coronavirus symptom app shows cases now so low some areas are reporting zero

The Covid symptom app shows there are finally areas in England where Covid has been all but eradicated.

According to data by the Zoe symptoms app, the total number of daily infections currently stands at 945 across the whole of the UK.

The data, analysed by Kings College London, puts the current risk of getting infected at one in 45,000 - and just one in 150,000 in fully vaccinated people

Yorkshire and the Humber remains the worst hit area with 274 daily cases, The Sun reports.

Scotland comes after that at 207 while the South East has 239 cases.

But Northern Ireland, the North East and the North East, as well as the east of England, reported no further cases through the app, showing virus levels there are now very low.

Numbers in the West Midlands and Wales are at 57, while in London there were 31 reported cases.

The East Midlands and the South West had 66 and 36 respectively.

Public Health England, meanwhile, reports 2,445 new cases of people testing positive to the virus.

That brings the weekly total to 15,811, down 1,485 on the previous week.

Deaths are at 22 for a total of 157 in the past seven days.

The promising data comes a day after England's deputy chief medical officer Jonathan Van-Tam suggested "we are at or close to the bottom" of levels of coronavirus cases in the UK.

Speaking at a Downing Street briefing on Wednesday, Mr Van-Tam said the numbers of people testing positive for Covid-19 were "in very low levels" as they averaged at 2,000 a day.

He also said the figures suggest vaccinations will reduce the impact of a third wave, which he said could be more of a "third upsurge".

A quarter of UK adults have received both doses of a Covid-19 jab with the latest figure standing at just over 14 million.

That while 34 million have received their first dose of the two jabs currently available, namely Pfizer and AstraZeneca.

Professor Van-Tam said it would be "incredibly safe" for two people who have been fully vaccinated to meet up without social distancing, as is happening in the US.

But he said that is still currently not happening in England due to younger people, barring the clinically extremely vulnerable and health workers, not being vaccinated.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock, meanwhile, said the government's four-step roadmap to exiting lockdown is designed so the nation "moves as one".
