Coronavirus: Susanna Reid begs for end to stockpiling after 'distressing' NHS nurse video

Susanna Reid shared her "distress" over the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, with food shortages and stockpiling affecting several, including NHS workers.

The show played a video clip of an NHS nurse, Dawn Bilbrough, who pleaded with the public to stop overbuying stock including fruit and vegetables.

She said the emergency services, who were risking their health amid the pandemic to treat and care for people, were now struggling to find food to eat.

With services on the frontline working hard and for long hours, they're finding supermarkets empty as panic buying sweeps the country.

COVID-19 positive cases in the UK have soared past 3,000 now, with 144 deaths confirmed.

Speaking on GMB on Friday morning, host Susanna, who is self-isolating at home, spoke via video link to have her say.

She urged supermarkets to "step it up a little bit", while urging those who are stockpiling to stop.

Susanna said: "My heart absolutely broke - like everybody's - when we watched her.

"How are the people at the front line going to maintain their health and stamina in the face of this if they can't get fresh fruit and veg, and the food that they need to nourish themselves?

"The supermarkets, I know, are working hard to tackle this and they just need to step it up a little bit.

"Now that schools that closed from Monday, there are going to be a lot of children at home all day needing feeding.

"So, the pressure on the supermarkets if about to ramp up even further."

She was speaking in response to the heartbreaking clip that circulated online this week - shown to viewers on GMB.

In the short video, Dawn sobbed as she begged people to help those working to protect them, wanting them to stop taking all the food available.

She broke down, saying: "I'm a critical care nurse and I've just finished 48 hours of work and I just wanted to get some stuff in for the next 48 hours.

"There's no fruit, there's no vegetables and I just don't know how I'm supposed to stay healthy.

"Those people who are just stripping the shelves have basic foods you just need to stop it because it's people like me that are going to be looking after you when you are at your lowest and just stop it please!"

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
