Coronavirus: Sunderland University to stay open and teaching to continue as normal

Sunderland University is to stay open amid the coronavirus outbreak with teaching to "continue as normal."

The university said they will "continue to implement the science-led guidance from government and Public Health England" and said that this means they will stay open.

On Tuesday (March 17), they said the next steps will be proposed as they continue to assess the situation.

In an email sent to staff, Chief Operating Officer, Steve Knight said: "Following yesterday’s announcement by the Prime Minister, I am writing to confirm that we will continue to implement the science-led guidance from government and Public Health England.

"This means that the University will remain open, and teaching and other activities will carry on as normal.

"Over the next few days, we will be exploring further proportionate measures and working on our contingency plans as we head to the end of the academic term on Friday 3 April.

"We will provide an update on Tuesday 17 March on the next steps being proposed.

"Please be assured that protecting and supporting the health and wellbeing of our University community remains our top priority."

The news came as Durham University said they would stop classroom teaching from Monday, March 16 until the end of term on March 20.

Northumbria University also announced that classroom teaching and learning activity will be cancelled from Monday.

At the moment, Newcastle University remains open and is operating as normal and it says that working from home "should not be necessary".
