Coronavirus: Stranger sends desperate mum Calpol for daughter as supermarkets ran out

A mum says she is ‘overwhelmed’ by the kindness of a stranger who gave her Calpol for her sick daughter.

Kate Hazell, from the town of Hayle in Cornwall, had been desperately searching for medicine after her daughter Destiny fell ill with a cough.

When the eight-year-old came home from school on Monday with a high temperature, her concerned mum rang 111 and was advised to self-isolate for 14 days due to the coronavirus outbreak, Cornwall Live reports.

But when Kate and her partner visited several shops and supermarkets in search of Calpol, they found the shelves empty.

“On Tuesday morning Destiny was still quite poorly and needed medication but only having tablets in the house she tried to take one but wasn’t successful,” Kate said.

“So me and my partner Rich on separate occasions then went on a hunt for 6+ Calpol with her being eight.

“We tried Home Bargains, Asda, Boots, the chemist, Morrisons, Tesco Extra and PoundShop.”

Disheartened that she was unable to get much-needed medicine for her daughter, Kate said she then ‘had a rant’ about unnecessary stockpiling on Facebook, saying that her daughter was suffering because of people's greed.

She then received a message from Jon Vann, a stranger who lives in nearby Connor Downs, offering her a bottle for free.

“That’s when I got the most kind message from Jon who doesn’t even know me and offered me a bottle of 6+ for free," she continued.

"I was so overwhelmed by his kindness and wanted to show the public how he had restored faith back into the community.

“I felt so overwhelmed and taken back that a stranger wanted to help by giving us a bottle. It brought a tear to my eye.

“My daughter was upset that we couldn’t get any medicine that she could have and got distressed by having to try to take a tablet.”

Kate says that Jon, who has children of his own, offered up a spare bottle of the medicine saying that his children were not sick and they already had a bottle should they need it.

She was so moved by his kindness that she took to Facebook to thank him, writing: “I just wanted to put up an appreciation post.

"I just want to say a massive thank you to Jon Vann.

"All day we have been searching for 6+ Calpol as my daughter isn’t very well and we’ve been told to self isolate.

“If it wasn’t for this guy who doesn’t know me at all my daughter would still be suffering!

"So thank you so much for your kindness.

“I'm seriously overwhelmed by it and it's put faith back into the community while people are being a***holes and bulk buying.

“We really do appreciate your kindness today.”
