Coronavirus: Staff at Penneys Dublin HQ to work from home as part of COVID-19 preparations

The majority of staff at Penneys headquarters have been told to work from tomorrow as part of its coronavirus preparations.

Primark, which operates as Penneys in Ireland, employs 1,000 people in it's Dublin headquarters.

The retailer said the decision was made to trial it's contingency plans which they have put in place should they need to close their office over a COVID-19 outbreak.

Staff in their Reading office in the UK have also been instructed to work remotely from home on Friday.

In a statement the company said: "In order to test our operational readiness and IT capability should a situation arise where we need to temporarily close one of our offices, we have asked the majority of our employees in our Dublin Headquarters and Reading Office to work remotely on Friday 6th March.

"Primark (Penneys) has robust contingency plans in place as the main priority is the health and wellbeing of employees" the company added.

The company also stressed that it has not had any cases of COVID-19 amongst it's employees.

The decision comes as Vodafone employees have also been told to work from home for similar coronavirus preparations.

Staff in the mobile giant's headquarters in Dublin will not head into the office on Friday but the company has said the move will not apply to those working in stores across the country.

To date there have been 9 confirmed cases of coronavirus on the island of Ireland. Six cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the Republic while another three were confirmed in Northern Ireland. On Monday up to 8,000 Google staff members were told to work from home after a coronavirus scare at it’s Dublin office.

The tech giant said it can’t confirm that the employee has COVID-19.

But the individual reported flu-like symptoms and as a result have asked all staff who may have been in close contact with the member to stay at home on Tueaday.

Google said the move was a “precautionary measure,” and it’s understood that staff were asked to monitor their health until the company has “greater clarity into whether they’re at any risk.”
