Coronavirus: Shoppers 'panicking' in Bristol as Tesco rations products

Bristol's supermarket workers say stores have been 'crazy' this week as coronavirus panic buying has seen stockpiling taking place on an unprecedented level.

Dozens of stores across our city have run low of hand sanitiser, toilet rolls and baked beans amid COVID-19 hysteria.

Now, bosses at Tesco have decided to ration customers to five items each of UHT milk, pasta and baked beans, both online and in store,  reports the Telegraph.

On the supermarket giant's website, shoppers are told they have reached a five-item limit when trying to order the products.

The move comes as the number of cases in the UK soared to 244 after a second death was recorded in the UK.

An Aldi employee told Bristol Live they have seen the number of tinned items bought soar over the last week.

They said: "I witnessed a customer yesterday buy half of the conveyor belt worth of tins, rice, pasta and noodles.

"I did notice a lot of customers were buying a lot of tinned foods.

"Also the demand for antibacterial hand sanitiser is crazy.

Find things to do with the kids near you:

"We’ve ran out of hand sanitiser and we only have a few on the till for staff and they even had a customer try and take one.

"Not to mention, we’ve been twice as busy as usual."

While someone else said: "I shopped at Home Bargains at Bishopsworth yesterday and it was completely sold out of toilet roll and antibacterial hand wash.

"Asda in Bedminster was completely sold out of hand wash and the queues at Asda were crazy - I think people are stockpiling."

And a Bristol Tesco worker posted on Reddit: "The shelves have been cleared of various products with a long shelf life.  Stuff like pasta, long life milk and canned foods,  hand sanitiser, wipes and anti-bac sprays were cleared too. Paracetamol aisle decimated.

"Not sure what the rest of Bristol and the rest of the UK is like, but in my area people sure are panicking."

Meanwhile several viral posts have been shared on Facebook urging people not to panic buy to help the elderly who will not be able to bulk purchase.
