Coronavirus sees Mayoral and local elections in England postponed for a year

Mayoral and local elections in England have been postponed for one year due to coronavirus outbreak.

A raft of elections were due to take place across the country on Thursday May 7.

But they have now been postponed for at least a year because of the ongoing crisis surrounding coronavirus.

In Merseyside, local elections were due to take place across all the region's boroughs.

We were also due to elect a Regional Metro Mayor, a Liverpool City Mayor and a Police and Crime Commissioner.

The decision comes after the Electoral Commission said on Thursday the polls should be delayed until the autumn to "mitigate" the impact of the virus.

The polling watchdog had said there were "growing risks" to the delivery of the polls, due on 7 May.
