Coronavirus sees Gareth Southgate abandon England get-together as friendlies suspended

Gareth Southgate has abandoned any idea of an England get-together later this month.

Football Association chiefs had considered getting the players together if England’s friendlies with Italy and Denmark were postponed later this month.

But the FA have confirmed that there is now no meet up or training sessions planned despite the games being cancelled because of the coronavirus.

England boss Southgate had wanted to look at potential call-ups including the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Jack Grealish but it will not happen.

The FA announced the games will be off, it is also expected that UEFA will postpone Euro 2020 for a year which takes away the pressing need to prepare for this summer.

That also means the end-of-season games with Romania and Austria in June are set to be cancelled. Meanwhile, the FA’s St George’s Park training base does remain open but some non-training staff are working from home.

FA chiefs have also confirmed they will issue full ticket refunds for any fans who have bought tickets for the games with Italy and Denmark.

Premier League clubs are also reluctant to release any foreign stars for international call-ups during the coronavirus crisis.

The FA will be taking part in the UEFA crisis meeting on Tuesday when proposals to move Euro 2020 back by a year are likely to get the go-ahead.
