Coronavirus: Scottish paramedic dies of COVID-19, ambulance service confirms

A Scottish paramedic has died from coronavirus, it has been confirmed.

The Scottish Ambulance Service made the announcement this morning to confirm that one of its staff members had passed away after contracting COVID-19.

The staff member, a paramedic in the West Region, sadly passed away in hospital on Saturday, 2 May.

The name or identity of the staff member has not yet been released out of respect for the family.

Pauline Howie, Chief Executive of the Scottish Ambulance Service, said:

“On behalf of everyone at SAS, I would like to offer my heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathies to the family. Our focus will be on supporting them during this very difficult time.”

Last Tuesday, a minutes silence was held throughout Scotland and the rest of the UK to honour and pay respects to the frontline workers who have sadly lost their lives from coronavirus.

Frontline workers, such as the Scottish Ambulance Service as well as doctors, nurses and other NHS staff, have all been working tirelessly to fight the virus as it continues to spread.

Last week First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced that a total of 11 frontline workers in Scotland had died from COVID-19.
