Coronavirus: Scots islanders on Skye beg tourists to stop coming amid coronavirus warnings

Terrified residents on the Isle of Skye have slammed visitors flocking to the island in their droves, despite government warnings around coronavirus.

Scots living in the tourist hot spot claim a raft of visitors and camper vans are turning up and fear they'll spread the virus.

One worried local told the Record: "I can tell you that visitors and camper vans are arriving in numbers to the Isle of Skye

"One friend in Broadford this morning was passed by loads of camper vans coming to the island."

The added: "Surely there is a huge chance that these visitors, who have been urged by the Government not to travel, could be bringing the Coronavirus into Skye?

"We residents are doing all we can, and we do not have hospitals on our doorsteps for emergencies.

"It is an awful situation for all of us nationwide, but flocking to our islands and highlands is surely spreading the virus both here and en route."

We told earlier how tourists were urged not to travel to Scotland's Highlands and Islands and as the pandemic puts a 'strain' on medical services.

The Islands of Barra and Vatersay in the Western Isles have been reportedly closed off from the mainland since 11.40pm on Friday night.

Both islands reportedly have no access to ventilators, oxygen or testing facilities for the deadly bug.

A tweet from the Isle of Barra social media account said that medical staff on the islands have been overwhelmed by the outbreak of Covid-19.

It read: “Don’t travel here, don’t put unnecessary strain on our medical staff and limited resources.

“We will open again and be delighted to see you.

"But in the meantime we are looking after our community, the thing that makes us so special."

CalMac Ferries confirmed that services to the islands remains business as usual and have dismissed claims of their closure as rumours.

The local MP for the area has echoed the calls for people to avoid the island while slamming the facilities available for locals.

Angus MacNeil, MP for Na h-Eileanan an Iar, said:"Castlebay village hall in Barra and medics have prepared for coronavirus - this is not far from 3rd world basic.

“No ventilators, no much oxygen either, no testing.

"Islands such as this could be badly hit.

"Applies to all Scottish islands."

Politicians in the Scottish Highland have also issued a dire warning that their area must not be used as a way of self isolating as cars and campervans clog the roads.

There have so far been no confirmed cases of coronavirus within the NHS Western Isles health board area.

In Scotland, seven people have passed away as a result of the virus.
